Step One: Choose the Slab, Not the Sample
Granite is quarried, so the 4-inch chip in a designer’s binder tells you the color family and nothing about the movement. Two slabs of the same named stone can look like different materials.

Pro Tip: Before you sign off, ask us to mark your actual layout on the slab with a grease pencil. Seeing where the sink cutout and the seam fall on the real veining catches problems that a digital layout does not. We have had clients change slabs at that exact moment, and it saved them a countertop they would have resented for twenty years.
Step Two: Choose the Finish
Finish changes the feel and the upkeep more than most homeowners expect. Polished granite is the high-gloss standard, easy to wipe down and the best at showing off color depth.
Honed granite reads matte and modern. Leathered granite has a soft textured sheen created with diamond-tipped brushes, and it hides water spots and fingerprints better than anything else we offer. Pro Tip: Be careful with honed finishes on dark granite. Honing opens the surface slightly and dark stone shows every fingerprint and oil smudge, so a honed absolute black island in a busy kitchen gets wiped constantly. If you want the matte look on a dark stone, leathered is the finish that actually lives well.

Step Three: Choose the Edge
An eased edge is clean and neutral. A beveled edge cuts a small angle that catches light and highlights the stone’s pattern. Bullnose is rounded and family-friendly. Ogee brings an S-curve for traditional rooms. A mitered edge joins two pieces at forty-five degrees to read as a thick monolithic slab.

Pro Tip: A mitered edge has to be cut from material adjacent to the top piece on the same slab, or the veining stops dead at the corner. That means extra square footage and more shop time, so tell us early if you want the thick look. Deciding at template is the expensive version of that conversation.
What Changes the Answer in a Real Fort Wayne Kitchen
